Bengali Hindu Matrimony

This page is for Bengali-speaking Hindu families, in Kolkata and across West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, other Indian cities and abroad, who are searching for a life partner. It explains the customs that usually shape a Bengali match and how to describe them on a free profile.

The Bengali marriage search

Traditionally, Bengali matches were often found through a ghotok, a matchmaker, and through relatives and newspaper advertisements, and parents still lead many searches today. Families usually exchange the kushti (horoscope) and family details first; if both sides are happy, the families meet and then hold the 'ashirbad', at which elders bless the bride and groom and the match is confirmed.

Communities such as Brahmin, Kayastha and Baidya, and families with roots in East Bengal (often called Bangal) or West Bengal (Ghoti), can have their own preferences. State what matters to your family and leave optional fields blank if they don't.

Kushti, gotra and the wedding date

Kushti matching is common, and marriage within the same gotra is generally avoided. The wedding is fixed for an auspicious 'lagna', and Bengali weddings are often held in the evening or at night. Weddings are not usually held during certain months of the Bengali calendar, so families often plan around the auspicious dates.

Rituals families talk about

Before the wedding there is the 'aiburobhat', a last meal as an unmarried person, and the 'gaye holud' turmeric ceremony. At the wedding, the bride hides her face behind betel leaves until the 'shubho drishti', the first look between the couple, and the groom applies sindoor during the 'sindoor daan'.

Searching for a Bengali match on this site

Type 'Bengali' (or 'Bangla') in the mother tongue filter and combine it with state (West Bengal) or a family city such as Kolkata. Many Bengali professionals work in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR or abroad, so check the work city as well as the family city.

If you add your star and rashi, the site can show a 36-point guna score when the other profile has them too; the full kushti can be exchanged privately once you are connected and both sides agree to share contact details.
