Tamil Hindu Matrimony
This page is for Tamil-speaking Hindu families, in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and abroad, who are looking for a bride or groom. It explains the customs that usually shape a Tamil marriage search and how to describe them on a free TheHinduMatrimony.com profile.
How a Tamil marriage search usually starts
In many Tamil families the search begins with the jathagam, the horoscope prepared at birth. Parents often exchange jathagams before any meeting, and a family astrologer checks them first. If the charts are considered a match, the families talk on the phone, and later a 'ponnu paarkal' visit is arranged, when the groom's family visits the bride's home.
Tamil families today are spread across Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and other towns, and also live in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf, the UK and North America. Saying where you live now, and where you expect to live after marriage, saves a lot of back-and-forth.
Jathagam, porutham and chevvai dosham
Tamil astrologers commonly check porutham, a set of compatibility factors traditionally counted as ten (such as dinam, ganam, yoni, rasi and rajju). Many families treat rajju porutham as especially important. Chevvai dosham, the Tamil term for what North Indian families call manglik, is also checked, and families usually look for a match in which both or neither chart has it.
The compatibility score on TheHinduMatrimony.com uses the 36-point guna method, which is the North Indian system. If your family follows porutham, add your star (natchathiram), rasi and manglik status so other families can do their own check, and treat the on-site score as a first indication rather than a substitute for your astrologer.
Community, gotram and kula deivam
Brahmin communities such as Iyer and Iyengar generally avoid marriage within the same gotram, and some also consider the sub-sect (for example Vadakalai or Thenkalai among Iyengars). In other Tamil communities, gotram may matter less than the family's caste, native village and kula deivam, the family deity.
Add community, sub-caste and gotram on your profile only if they matter to your family. If you are open to other Tamil communities, or to non-Tamil families, say so in your introduction.
Searching for a Tamil match on this site
After signing in, type 'Tamil' in the mother tongue filter, and combine it with state (Tamil Nadu) or family city if you want families from a particular area. Diet is worth stating clearly: many Tamil families are strictly vegetarian, while others are not, and it is a frequent deciding point.
Once an interest is accepted, phone numbers and family details are exchanged only when both sides agree, so jathagams can be shared privately at that stage.
How TheHinduMatrimony.com works
Creating a profile, browsing, shortlisting and sending interests are free. You can create a profile for yourself or on behalf of a son, daughter, sibling or relative.
When someone accepts your interest you become connected. Connected members can talk privately, and phone numbers and family details are exchanged only when both people agree to share them.
You can block or report any profile at any time, and blocked members can no longer see you, send you interests or message you.
